History
NATO was
established in the aftermath of World War II, largely to prevent Soviet
expansion into Europe.
The Soviet Union took over the threat of increasing its influence in Europe and faced the threat of communist expansion in 1949 of NATO - the North Atlantic Treaty Organization Was formed
The founding members of NATO signed the North Atlantic Treaty on April 4, 1949. It worked closely with the United Nations, World Bank and International Monetary Fund (IMF). The organizations were formed during the 1944 Bretton Woods conference.
Originally consisting of 12 countries, the organization was expanded to
include Greece and Turkey in 1952 and West Germany in 1955. However, the United
States has dominated the coalition since then.
After West Germany joined the NATO, in 1955 the Soviet Union formed a counter-alliance called the Warsaw Pact, the communist countries formed the Warsaw Pact alliance. Including the USSR, Bulgaria, Hungary, Romania, Poland, Czechoslovakia, and East Germany.
Which dissolved after the dissolution of the USSR
in 1991. And the Czech Republic, Hungary and Poland became the first former
Warsaw Pact country to gain NATO membership in 1999.
After the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991 and
the end of Warsaw Pact, NATO ceased to be an organization.
