Overview
History
Aboriginal Canadians are the first to
have occupied Canada long before Europeans occupied the country. These Native
Canadians lived as groups - until Europeans, or "new" Canadians, came
to claim the land for themselves.
The first Europeans to arrive in Canada
around 1,000AD - the Vikings.
Soon after, when Leif Eriksson landed
and named the land "Vinland",
Centuries later, in 1497, King Henry
VII of England sent an Italian, John Cabot, on an expedition to Newfoundland —
a journey that England later used to claim Canada, and which multicultural,
Bilingual shaped Canada as we know it today.
The French, Jacques Cartier sailed towards the St. Lawrence River during the 1530s - the region was claimed as a French territory. In fact, the permanent inhabitants of Europe long ago were the French, who established themselves in the St. Lawrence Valley of Canada, which they called New France.
During the American War of Independence, Canada remained loyal to Britain rather than fighting with 13 American colonies. After the war, a new border was created between the United States and Canada for which the Great Lakes were used to pull its boarder. Due to the demands of the new Canadians, the Crown passed the Constitutional Act 1791, dividing Quebec into Lower Canada and Upper Canada, which were French and English respectively.
The term
"Canada" was first used when Lower and Upper Canada were formed,
Canada was officially born in 1867 after Britain passed the British North American
Act, governing Canada itself. Was independence and became the first Dominion of
the British Empire.
Soon after the First World War, Canada's position changed and in 1931 gave Canada the right to be an independent nation.
In 1982 the Canada Act finally ended Canada's last remaining relationship with the British Parliament. Prior to the passage of this Act, certain amendments to the Canadian Constitution had to be approved by the UK government. Despite the Canada Act, Queen Elizabeth II is still the head of state and Queen of Canada, a role distinct to her role as British emperor.
Canada's political system is called "constitutional monarchy",
which means a government elected with a queen or king.
Today, Queen Elizabeth is Canada's "head of state", which means
that when she does not rule the country, she remains part of our system of
government. Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II Queen of Canada Huh. She has
dedicated her life to public service and continues to serve Canada and
